Container Metadata Issue Fixed in General Sensor 1.42.1-0
Overview
This notification addresses a container discovery issue affecting Qualys General Sensor version 1.41.2-0 and below when the –mask-env-variable flag is enabled. Under specific conditions, application containers may not be fully discovered by the sensor, resulting in missing metadata on the Assets → Containers page. The issue has been resolved in sensor version 1.42.1-0, and an upgrade is recommended to ensure complete container discovery and metadata visibility.
Affected Versions
- Qualys General Sensor version 1.41.2-0 and below.
- Applies only when the –mask-env-variable flag is enabled at sensor startup.
Issue Description
If you are running Qualys General Sensor version 1.41.2-0 or below with the –mask-env-variable flag enabled, application containers with environment variables containing special characters (for example, semicolons, commas) may not be fully discovered by the sensor.
Symptoms
When the issue occurs, affected containers exhibit the following:
- They appear in the Assets → Containers page with incomplete metadata.
- Fields such as name, image, and labels are shown as null.
- Container discovery and downstream visibility are incomplete until the sensor is upgraded.
Resolution
The issue has been resolved in Qualys General Sensor version 1.42.1-0. The fix ensures that environment variables containing special characters are handled correctly even when the –mask-env-variable flag is enabled, allowing affected containers to be discovered with complete metadata.
Recommended Action
- Upgrade Qualys General Sensor to version 1.42.1-0 or later.
- After upgrade, validate that previously affected containers now appear on the Assets → Containers page with complete metadata (name, image, labels, etc.).
- Customers running –mask-env-variable should give this upgrade priority to restore full container discovery.
